A £41 million restoration programme for the English National Opera

: English National Opera and construction managers GTCM

: Restoration of the auditorium and improvements to front of house public areas in the second phase of a high profile restoration programme at The Coliseum, St Martin’s Lane, London.

: In keeping with the theatre’s original aims when it was built 100 years ago, the focus was on creating excellent public facilities. Front of house space is increased by 40% and much-needed expanded cloakroom facilities have been constructed. Lancsville was a main contractor for general construction.

: Listed building conversions are always testing: in such a high profile location with a stream of public visitors, building works are under constant scrutiny. Protecting historic features and making sure that scheduled performances can continue without undue disruption were very important in this well-loved landmark building. Lancsville’s role in the restoration programme was complex and demanded work in many different building disciplines: reinforced concrete, temporary works, decoration and first fix carpentry amongst others.

: Lancsville made sure that communication with the client team was constant and detailed. This meant that a complex and diverse range of project elements was well controlled and integrated with the ongoing public operation of the Coliseum and other contractor work on site. The Coliseum has now reopened to celebrate its 2004 centenary.
